Hip scarves jingle as Serena Studio instructors go through the basic dance movements. Drum beats and traditional music play in the background as students shimmy and shake. A haven for those serious about learning the true art of belly dance, this single studio school can’t be beat.
While other dance schools and fitness centers use belly dance as a means of exercise, Serena Studios’ main and only focus is the traditional roots of this art form. Instructors drill body movements over and over each class enforcing muscle memory. After a while and much practice, students can achieve a more fluid and graceful movement.
Located several blocks from Columbus Circle, this fourth-floor studio is hidden above restaurants and local stores. The exterior of the building is nowhere near welcoming and getting on its elevator can require a long wait. Despite those factors, students are met with a warm welcome from the studio staff.
Unlike other dance schools, beginning levels of Serena Studios Belly Dance are not overwhelmingly intimidating. The instructors relay their enthusiasm and the basic classes allow students to learn at their own pace. Classes are lighthearted, filled with laughter and are always fun. The instructors make it a point to teach at a pace everyone can follow.
Serena’s instructors are seasoned belly dancers. They’re knowledgeable and are there to help students learn the art form to the best of their abilities. Advanced classes build upon the basic movements and incorporate transitions and props. For the serious dancers whowant to develop their skills fully, this is definitely a school to train at.
Though focused on as an art form at Serena Studios, belly dance really does whip the midsection into shape if done consistently. With classes on an ongoing basis, there is no commitment to the school. At $12 a lesson, there’s nothing to lose. So what are you waiting for? Shake it like your hips don’t lie.
