The Mother of All closing night audience award domajiggers?
THE WHITE STORM 2 DRUG LORDS closing the NYAFF 2019, Sunday, July 14, 2019
Based on a real event in the late 1880s, a competition that that persists today, SAMURAI MARATHON, starring Takeru Satoh, Nana Komatsu and Mirai Moriyama, and directed by Bernard Rose, should rock the cinematic richter scales when it is released. It was the opening night film for the 2019 NYAFF.
An ultraviolent cops vs. gangsters bloodbath with casualties on both sides. Fast forward 20 years, a surviving cop team member Madam Fong (Jade Leung, Black Cat) leads a new squad in pursuit of freckless young anarchists terrorizing Macao. An apparition from that fatal day shows up – bringing everything full circle. With badass modern women warriors at the forefront, director Jacky Lee showcasing his hyperbolic styling of classic Hong Kong action, bringing back irrepressible ‘girls with guns’ sub-genre in full bombastic force.
