Fifth in a series of articles about the early weeks of the first semester.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

On the third-floor Sky Bridge,\u202f Emmy\u202f Adamczyk, a 21-year-old senior, wearing what she called her \u201cKim Possible Attire\u201d \u2013 green pants and a black T-shirt \u2013 got down to business with this reporter, describing a \u201cwhirlwind of a summer\u201d and insisting that the anticipated challenges of \u202fher\u202fsenior year \u202fwould not stop her from having a blast.<\/p>\n

She spent July studying abroad at Dongguk University<\/a> in Seoul, South Korea, where she took media classes and helped create a documentary on the differences between American and South Korean students.\u202f\u202f \u201cThe main difference is that students in South Korea focus more on their studies, not so much about \u202fgoing to\u202f parties,\u201d said \u202fAdamcyzk.<\/p>\n

Adamcyzk was\u202fhappy she explored a foreign country but \u202fwas not thrilled about the new semester. \u201cI wasn\u2019t nervous at the start because it is nearing the end of college, but it just recently hit me, the thought that I am graduating,\u201d\u202f said\u202f Adamcyzk. Uncertainty about one\u2019s career can create stress. There has been a 20 percent increase in college students complaining about stress, according to a 2018 story posted by the American Institute of Stress<\/a>. Stress can drive college students to consider suicide a solution, according to other reports. \u201cCollege can be so stressful that many students think about killing themselves, and some even try,\u201d according to an article written by Steven Rienberg, a health reporter for WebMD.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve started to do yoga to help with the potential stress of class,\u201d said Brittany \u202fBucceri, 21, a developmental psychology major. She also said she\u202f already has her future plans in \u202fview.\u202f Sitting in an empty classroom on the fifth\u202ffloor of the North Building, \u202fBucceri\u202f spoke of her\u202f summer of travel and leisure. She \u202fvacationed in Montreal, St. Thomas, Boston\u202fand spent quality time with friends and family.\u202f \u201cSchool drained me,\u202f so summer\u202fwas a nice break,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Bucceri also volunteered at Bellevue Hospital<\/a>, 462 First Avenue, lower Manhattan, where she\u202fworked helping \u202fto normalize the hospital experiences for children with medical issues. She read to them and played games. The experience was \u201cvery rewarding,\u201d\u202fsaid \u202fBucceri, and\u202fprovided\u202fmore \u201chands-on experience.\u201d Bucceri wants to study for a\u202fdoctorate in clinical psychology and to work with children, especially.<\/p>\n

In the tenth-floor stairwell in the North Building, 21-year-old senior Jasmeet Nanrag, sitting in the corner with her cell phone, smiled as this reporter, notebook in hand, approached. Nanrag moved to Kew Gardens, Queens, from India five years ago. \u201cIt was all very brand new, the culture was different and learning the slang was hard,\u201d she said. Nanrag is a computer science major and spent her summer working at a high school in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n

She tutored children with special needs, teaching math, getting to work closely with them one on one. Nanrag dreams of becoming a computer science professor. \u201cBeing a professor will give me the chance to explore myself and research,\u201d she said. As for her short-term goals for this school year, \u201cI want to complete my degree and see what happens,\u201d said Nanrag.<\/p>\n

On the seventh floor sky bridge,\u202fShannon Dalrymple, a 21-year-old senior, talked about an exhausting summer. She interned at Community Board 8<\/a> on 59th Street and Lexington Avenue. It\u00a0 covers the Upper East Side and Roosevelt Island. Asked about the \u202fbeginning of the school year, Dalrymple \u202fwas\u202fblas\u00e9. \u201cI\u2019m not nervous, also not excited, I\u2019m pretty neutral to it,\u201d\u202f she said.<\/p>\n

Dalrymple said she may enroll in graduate school for library sciences in New York City. Her short-term goal?<\/p>\n

\u201cSurvive.\u201d<\/p>\n

She laughed when she spoke, but this reporter believed she was serious.<\/p>\n
