{"id":2336,"date":"2016-05-21T16:13:47","date_gmt":"2016-05-21T20:13:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hunterword.com\/?p=2336"},"modified":"2017-11-04T22:24:30","modified_gmt":"2017-11-05T02:24:30","slug":"the-heat-is-on-as-the-semester-ends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/hunterword.com\/index.php\/the-heat-is-on-as-the-semester-ends\/","title":{"rendered":"The Heat is on As the Semester Ends"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Article by Isabella Hamilton, May 21, 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two students interviewed about their most pressing concerns as the semester ends said increased police presence on city streets and the subway in the wake of the Brussels terrorist attacks raised their awareness about possible terror attacks in New York.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more police activity. There\u2019s a lot more police officers in the trains,\u201d said 19-year-old biology major Christopher Cantor. \u201cIt\u2019s similar with the <a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2016\/03\/02\/nypd-putting-a-cop-on-every-subway-to-combat-slashings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slashings on the trains.<\/a> When everyone\u2019s more worried about it, the activity grew. Similar to the attack in Brussels, now everyone\u2019s on high alert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although he was aware of the Brussels attacks, 23-year-old psychology and media double major Adrian Kwiatkowski said, \u201cEven with everything going on on an international scale with police activity, it\u2019s something that I\u2019m sort of oblivious to.\u201d Kwiatkowski, a second semester senior from Glendale, also said, \u201cI think, partially, because I\u2019m Caucasian, so I don\u2019t usually have to deal with police. My other friends, though, who are darker skinned, have had to notice these things more.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/hunterword.campusave.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WORD Classifieds<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cI think we should always be worried because an attack like that could come from anywhere,\u201d said Cantor, a second semester freshman and a Brooklyn resident. \u201cIt\u2019s unpredictable. Civilians should always be aware of stuff that\u2019s going on around them, just in case something were to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should stop giving these people attention they don\u2019t deserve,\u201d Kwiatkowski said. \u201cInstead of having these 24-hour news cycles, just report what needs to be reported and move on to something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t need to know about the terrorist\u2019s favorite color or coffee,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if it was possible to curb, prevent, or eliminate terror, Kwiatkowski said, \u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s a way to prevent terror. It\u2019s just the world we live in now, unfortunately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cantor also weighed in on campus concerns including the Professional Staff Congress and its strike authorization vote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTruthfully, I think what they\u2019re doing is right,\u201d said Cantor. \u201cEveryone would be mad if they weren\u2019t being paid what they deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PSC members have not had a raise in six years and negotiations with CUNY for a fair contract are stalled. The PSC has asked its members for authorization in the case of failed negotiations.
