The New York Times online edition headlines a November 5 story by reporters Farah Stockman and Nick Corasaniti as T<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/11\/06\/us\/politics\/world-reaction-campaign.html?&amp;hp&amp;action=click&amp;pgtype=Homepage&amp;clickSource=story-heading&amp;module=b-lede-package-region&amp;region=top-news&amp;WT.nav=top-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>he Campaign That Has Wounded America&#8217;s Image.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For now, a polarized America is choosing, on the one hand, between a vainglorious business tycoon whose campaign trail is gutted with allegations of sexual debauchery, nativism and racism, business scandals while fueling the dreams of white nationalists. HIs opponent&#8217;s campaign trail is fettered with allegations of never-ending corruption and scandals over the course of her many years in the public eye.<\/p>\n<p>This reporter was one of several assigned to interview potential voters about their presidential preferences. Five interviewed for this article said that Americans are upset and alarmed with Congress, reflecting the findings in numerous articles and reports.That this sentiment gave way for political outsiders like Donald Trump to become the Republican candidate and for Democratic Socialist Senator Bernie Sanders to run a primary Democratic campaign that exceeded expectations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis election shows that Americans are tired of the status quo politicians have,\u201d said Andrew Fenwick, 21, a <a href=\"http:\/\/tcnj.pages.tcnj.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">College of New Jersey,<\/a> a political science major who lives in Rutherford, New Jersey.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4338\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4338\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4338\" src=\"http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/AndrewFenwick-300x171.jpg\" alt=\"Andrew Fenwick.\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/AndrewFenwick-300x171.jpg 300w, http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/AndrewFenwick-560x319.jpg 560w, http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/AndrewFenwick-260x148.jpg 260w, http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/AndrewFenwick-160x91.jpg 160w, http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/AndrewFenwick.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4338\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Andrew Fenwick.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Fenwick supported Senator Sanders but now supports Clinton. \u201cHe was an outsider and an underdog,&#8221; said Fenwick,\u00a0sitting on his desk at TCNJ, in his black sweater and gray sweats. &#8220;He talked about the greed of Wall Street, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Citizens_United_(organization)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Citizens United<\/a>, environmental issues; he addressed the Native American community. All of these I was passionate about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Support the &lt;i&gt;political outsider&lt;\/i&gt; is a sentiment shared by Karina Florez, 20, a Domino\u2019s pizza deliverer from Englewood, New Jersey.\u00a0 Florez too was a Sander\u2019s supporter and now supports Clinton, although she is not particularly excited about the Democratic candidate. \u201cVoters will be choosing the lesser of two evils,\u201d she said, wearing a Domino\u2019s uniform while delivering a pizza in New Milford, New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>Florez said that Clinton will win the nomination \u201cbut only because she\u2019s the other option. She\u2019s not Trump, but it\u2019s not like she\u2019s loved by Americans either.\u201d Clinton and Trump have the lowest unfavorable ratings of any Democratic or Republican nominees in decades, according to a Gallup poll.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Wish He Wasn&#8217;t Such a Buffoon<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The unfavorable ratings of the presidential candidates are record-breaking and bi-partisan, according to polls by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RealClearPolitics<\/a>. Democrats, Republicans, independents, liberals and conservatives feel shackled with candidates whom they didn\u2019t really want but have eventually learned to tolerate. Trump supporter Nathan Fishman, 21, who drives a tank for the Israel Defense Forces in Jerusalem and previously lived in Teaneck, New Jersey, described the election as \u201creally shameful,\u201d and said that he considered both candidates to be \u201cawful.\u201d<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4343\" src=\"http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/nathanfishman-300x185.jpg\" alt=\"nathanfishman\" width=\"300\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/nathanfishman-300x185.jpg 300w, http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/nathanfishman-260x160.jpg 260w, http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/nathanfishman-160x99.jpg 160w, http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/nathanfishman.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere wasn\u2019t one candidate that I could point to that I felt was my candidate,\u201d said Fishman, wearing an IDF uniform wlhen he was interviewed through a Skype call from his home in Jerusalem. \u201cThat being said, I agree with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.donaldjtrump.com\/policies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">main policies of Donald Trump<\/a>, so I guess you can say he is my first choice. I just wish he wasn\u2019t such a buffoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diego Ojeda, 50, a Spanish teacher from Louisville, Kentucky, said \u201cHillary has been the only choice for me. Electing her will show the real progressive America I have always believed in.\u201d Ojeda, an U.S. citizen born in Bogota, Colombia, said that he is very excited about the election and is ready to vote. \u201cHaving Hillary as the U.S. President will empower women in the world and will help our society understand that politicians must be individuals who are prepared to lead,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ojeda, interviewed via Skype, was the only person interviewed by this reporter who expressed a positive opinion of the election. The rest gave gloomy and disappointed responses. Fenwick described Clinton as \u201cholding traces of corruption and mismanagement at a federal level,\u201d and that she comes off as if she was \u201centitled to the position because she has been in politics her whole life.\u201d Florez described the Clintons as being \u201cshrouded in scandals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Thinly Veiled White Nationalism<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They weren\u2019t so nice about Trump. Fishman, a Trump supporter, described the business tycoon as an \u201cawful candidate\u201d and a \u201cbuffoon.\u201d Fenwick described Donald Trump as \u201cignorant, self-motivated, and has little-to-no experience to the standards that president needs\u201d and that Clinton should \u201clet him destroy himself\u201d if she hopes to win the election.<\/p>\n<p>However, searing criticism of Trump came from Alexander Blaha, a 22-year-old Hunter English Literature major from Long Island. At the College subway stop, Lexington Avenue and 68<sup>th<\/sup> Street, Blaha waited for a 6 train. Wearing white shirt and jeans, and over the roar of trains, he said \u201cTrump is running on a platform of thinly veiled white nationalism,\u201d Blaha said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4341\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4341\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4341\" src=\"http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/pubAlexanderBhaha-300x259.jpg\" alt=\"Alexander Blaha\" width=\"300\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/pubAlexanderBhaha-300x259.jpg 300w, http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/pubAlexanderBhaha-560x484.jpg 560w, http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/pubAlexanderBhaha-260x225.jpg 260w, http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/pubAlexanderBhaha-160x138.jpg 160w, http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/pubAlexanderBhaha.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4341\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alexander Blaha<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cHe and his supporters are scared of the world, scared of modernizing, laugh in the face of intelligence and education, think nothing of proposing the most preposterous, un-achievable and extremely close-minded policies in a three-word utterance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All six interviewees said that they would vote, a right so often ignored by many Americans that the U.S. voter turnout trails most developed countries, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2016\/08\/02\/u-s-voter-turnout-trails-most-developed-countries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to a PEW Research Center study.<\/a> The world\u2019s highest turnout rate was Belgium with 87.2 percent of people showing up to the polls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are angry and ashamed. Many are abstaining from the vote,\u201d said Genevieve Arroyo, 20, an Hunter English major living in Yorkville. \u201cI do believe that more people at least registered to vote because of [this election], and the parties will be more careful with choosing who will lead them.\u201d At the Hunter library, Arroyo, in a green and black striped shirt, said that she planned to vote for Clinton, and even though Clinton wasn\u2019t her first choice, she said that \u201cif someone doesn\u2019t vote, then they have no right to talk about the election and be upset about the outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.electproject.org\/early_2016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016 November General Election Early Voting<\/a><\/h2>\n<p><em>Ricardo Montero-Hernandez can be reached at <span class=\"rwRRO\">rmontero1616@gmail.com<\/span><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ricardo Montero-Hernandez was one of several WORD reporters assigned to interview potential voters about their presidential preferences.
