{"id":9018,"date":"2018-02-24T11:23:16","date_gmt":"2018-02-24T16:23:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hunterword.com\/?p=9018"},"modified":"2018-10-18T00:25:47","modified_gmt":"2018-10-18T04:25:47","slug":"mark-hedin-immigraton-greggwmorris","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/hunterword.com\/index.php\/mark-hedin-immigraton-greggwmorris\/","title":{"rendered":"Immigrant Rights Activists See Turning Point for All Americans, Say All Have to Step Up to the Plate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Article by Mark Hedin, Ethnic Media Services<\/p>\n<p>Warning that the country is heading down a white nationalist, nativist path, four immigrant rights advocates issued a call to action just hours before the U.S. Senate rejected all four proposals to change U.S. immigration policy and a second federal court found the President\u2019s \u201cMuslim ban\u201d unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>The advocates spoke at a national telebriefing for ethnic media sponsored by Ready California, a collaborative cross-sector effort led by the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, and Ethnic Media Services.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019ve all learned to expect the unexpected,\u201d said Sameera Hafiz, an attorney and senior policy strategist for the ILRC in Washington, D.C. \u201cThe reason we\u2019re here is because of Trump\u2019s decision in September to rescind the DACA program and throw the lives of close to 800,000 young people into chaos and uncertainty.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8991\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8991\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8991\" src=\"http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/sameera-hafiz.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"140\" height=\"157\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8991\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sameera Hafiz<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cBut while the Senate was ostensibly debating the future of the DACA program,\u201d Hafiz argued, \u201cthe reality is that any (proposed) DACA proposals go hand in hand with eliminating the diversity visa program, severely curtailing the family immigration program and expansive border enforcement measures \u2013 far beyond what we think about when we think about border security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd while we\u2019ve been focused in DC on the legislative side, we\u2019ve been distracted from what the administration is already doing,\u201d she also said. Hafiz cited attacks on jurisdictions with sanctuary policies and other enforcement actions against Dreamers, mothers and activists.<\/p>\n<p>Angelica Salas, Director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), agreed that what is underway is an attack on legal immigration itself which she called \u201ca white nationalist agenda (whereby) certain individuals are not qualified to come into the United States based on their country of birth and their religion.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8984\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8984\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-8984\" src=\"http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Angelica-Salas-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8984\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Angelica Salas<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On average, Salas noted, \u201cour clients being deported from Los Angeles had been in the country more than 25 years. With the crippling of various legal channels like the Central American minors program, the separation of children from parents, the ending of diversity vistas, \u201cthe list goes on,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019re destroying people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not just about the immigrant community any more. It\u2019s about what kind of country we want and who we are, as Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Zahra Billoo, executive director of the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and a civil rights attorney,\u00a0hailed the decision by the Fourth Circuit that joined a chorus of courts across the country that have said that the Muslim ban is unconstitutional. Nevertheless, she noted, \u201cWhether you are from Iran or Somalia, it does not matter what your story is, you cannot come to the U.S.\u201d \u00a0Billoo quoted a Georgetown University estimate that 60000 people had been impacted in their efforts to get an education or see their families.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8981\" style=\"width: 139px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8981\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-8981\" src=\"http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Zahra-129x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"129\" height=\"150\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8981\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zahra Billoo<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re optimistic,\u201d she said, but cautioned that what\u2019s legal doesn\u2019t always align with what\u2019s moral. \u201cThe court in the past has allowed many unjust things, such as the Japanese internment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adoubou Traore, Director of the African Advocacy Network which provides legal counsel for immigrants of the African diaspora, highlighted the dramatic growth of the African immigrant community, from 816,000 in 1980 to more than 4 million in 2016. Largely faceless and voiceless, this population has borne the brunt of every new restrictive immigration measure, from the Muslim ban to the removal of Temporary Protective Status (TPS).<\/p>\n<p>As immigrants and as blacks, \u201cWe are the only group that has been named racially, and coming from countries that have been named in ways that I don\u2019t even want to repeat, but we all heard it,\u201d\u00a0Traore said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8985\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8985\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-8985\" src=\"http:\/\/hunterword.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Adoubou-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8985\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adougou Traore<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Asked about the future of the immigrant rights movement, Salas noted the \u201ctremendous mobilization by immigrant youth and this will only increase as people mobilize around the March 5 Congressional deadline for a solution on DACA.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut this is a call to the broader immigrant community and Americans in general,\u201d Salas emphasized. \u201cWe need to stand up not just to be in solidarity with immigrants and refugees, and our brothers and sisters from the Muslim community.
