Film Review-Article: THE INVISIBLE DOCTRINE, The Secret History of Neoliberalism

THE INVISIBLE DOCTRINE: THE SECRET HISTORY OF NEOLIBERALISM is an extraordinary kinetically charged visually stunning 75-minute documentary savagely deconstructing neoliberalism, a political and economic ideology that promotes free-market capitalism, deregulation, privatization and a reduced role for the state in economic affairs.

The film’s finesse in using animation and graphic design to illustrate complex ideas about neoliberalism – especially its existential flaws and menace – rather than depending on standard documentary style interviews or archival footage is powerful.

Neoliberalism has profoundly – and inimically according to the filmmakers – shaped American politics, economics, and society since the late 1970s. It has influenced both major political parties and many of the institutions that govern the U.S. economy. An example of the menace can be seen in the debilitating consequences of 143 executive orders President Donald Trump has signed in the first 100 days of his presidency. Even misleading Headline Stories-Braking News nevertheless sufficiently tip off that something is seriously wrong for many.

This film’s truth-the whole truth-and-nothing-but-the-truth thematic warns about the perils of and nefarious nature of neoliberalism as an existential menace.

The film by Peter  Hutchison and Lucas Sabea is narrated by George Monbiot, a well-known journalist, author, environmental and political activist.

Picture right, George Monbiot. THE INVISIBLE DOCTRINE blends meticulous reporting and journalism research with powerful visuals to shine a light on an ideology that remains largely invisible in public discourse.

Even if those among us who may be skeptical of its framing – definitely not this reviewer —  it most certainly provokes thought and reflection and perhaps inspire a re-imagining of political and economic systems before it’s too late.
